Fourth Grade

Welcome back to school! I can’t believe that it’s that time of year again!  The
summer sure did fly by didn't it?  Well I am very excited for the upcoming
school year. Let me begin by introducing myself to those of you who may not
know me.  My name is Mrs. Melchi and this is my fourth year teaching at St.
Laurence School, my third teaching 4th grade. I know that this year will be
very interesting and fun.  We are going to learn so many great things, I
cannot wait to get started!

A few things that you need to know to get the school year off to a great start
are the following:

Snack Time: Every morning we will have snack time.  Please provide your
child with a light snack of crackers, veggies, cereal bars… Snack time only
lasts about 10 minutes so we need to have something quick and easy.  Candy
and soda/pop will not be allowed as a snack.  If you would like to send a juice
box along with your child for snack time, fine by me.  Also, since the weather is
till warm, your child will be allowed to bring a water bottle to class and keep it
with them all day.  Your child needs to pack his/her snack separate from their
lunch everyday!  I will not provide snacks for children who do not bring their
own. If you would like to donate some extra snacks for children who forget, it
would be greatly appreciated!

Grading Policy: The fourth grade students are on a regular grading scale
now, which means that they will receiving letter grades A, B, C, D and F based
on their percentages. I will send home the actual grading scale details within
the next few days.

Homework Policy and Assignment Books:  Homework will be given on a daily
basis. Late homework assignments will be recorded and deducted points,
depending on the nature of the homework.  Frequent missed or late
assignments will result in a detention.  I ask that all parents please check your
child's assignment book every single day. I also ask that you initial or sign the
assignment book daily.

Birthdays:  I am very happy to allow the children to celebrate their birthdays
with us at school.  I do ask that you notify me in advance if you intend on
bringing in treats. I also ask, if at all possible, to have the treats individually
wrapped as it makes it easier and a little more sanitary.  Please remember
that this is not a birthday party, but rather a 15-20 minute acknowledgement
of their special day.  Please do not go overboard.  Also, on the subject of
birthdays and parties, I do ask that unless the whole entire class is invited to a
birthday party that is planned outside of the classroom, please do not have
your child pass out invitations to a few kids at school.  It's either all or
nothing.  Feelings end up getting hurt.

Specials:  Our class will have gym, library, music and art this year.  I will send
home the actual schedule within the next few days.  On days that we have
gym (Tues and Fri) I do ask that your child's name is no both their shirts,
shorts, and gym shoes.  It makes it a lot easier to get all of the items back to
the rightful owner if their name is on it.  I also require that all uniform shirts,
pants, shorts and dresses also have your child's name in them.  They all look
alike so please make it easier for us!

Dress Down Days:  Friday Dress Down Days were such a success last year
that we have decided to continue it thru this year as well.  Every Friday is
going to be dress down day!  Yeah!  However, this applies to only the
students who turn in all of their work/homework on time and have not received
detentions that week.  If your child has not turned in an assignment or has
received a detention, then they will not be able to participate in dress down
days.  They will need to wear their uniforms. I will inform you if your child is not
able to dress down.

Spelling Tests:  We will have a spelling test every Friday.  The words will go
home on the previous Friday so that they will have a whole week to learn
them.  I will however stop sending home copies of the words after 1st quarter
and your child will be responsible for bringing their books home with the words.

I don't want to overload you with all of this information so I am going to stop
now. Please look in your child's folder very night for more notes from me
regarding things that are going on in they classroom.  If any of you ever have
any questions or concerns, please fell free to stop by before or after school or
even drop me a note.  You can also always leave a message for me in the
office and I will gladly get back to you.  Communication truly is the key to
success. Also please note that I am available at school before 7:30 and after
school until 2:30 (except Thursdays) for conferences or to offer extra help to
students who need it.  I truly  want this to be a successful and fun school year,
so if there is anything that I can do, please let me know!

Thanks so much!

Mrs Melchi
